We hear of logging in South America and Indonesia but how much do we know about the logging that is happening in our last and precious primeval forests of Europe? Paul White of the Transylvanian Wildlife Project is fighting the clear fell logging of ancient Oak, beech and pine in the breathtaking and pristine Great Carpathian forest.

by Paul White, Director Transylvanian Wildlife Project

One of the great, wild, intact forests of Europe is under threat. A place where lynx, Wolves and Bears still roam.

The Great Carpathian Forest

The forests of Transylvania have been lucky to escape the historic logging that has removed most of Europe’s forests. Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) is now firmly established in Europe and most of Europe’s forests are now in management.  It is simply unthinkable to allow logging in the remaining vestiges of primeval forest.

The timber giant Holzindustrie Schweighofer want to commence logging in Transylvanian primeval forest. This is wrong and we urge you to sign this petition against the proposal.

Explore Europe’s virgin forest ecosystem and learn more, watch this short film…

Why is the Carpathian ecosystem so important to all of Europe and why should it be protected?

Here are four facts that you should know about:-

1. The Carpathians are a vital watershed for Central Europe, feeding the major rivers of this region.

2. The Carpathians act as a bridge between Europe’s northern and southwestern forests, the range serves as a biological corridor for the dispersal of plants and animals throughout Europe.

3. Though approximately 16% of the ecosystem is under some form of protection, logging, hunting, and development threaten to break this critical corridor link.

4. The Carpathian’s steeply sloped forests provide habitat for the largest populations in Europe of brown bear, wolf and lynx, as well as over one third of all European plant species.

could you please tell about Austrian and Chinese companies that are lobbying against forest protection acts? Romania has old forests left not because of not being industrialized (as it was during communist regime), but because of sound and sustainable forest policies during the 50 years of communist regime. it was after the fall of the communism that Romania was turned into a resource based economy and corruption, greed and simple poverness led to the second large scale deforestation (the first one was at the end of the 19th century, as Romania had become an independent free state).

What really concerns me are the really important questions put to the local authorities in Reci by leading journalists that remain unanswered. For example:-

1. Will local forests in the Carpathian region of Covasna county be able to provide enough trees to supply the proposed lumber plant at Reci with 800.000 cbm of logs, without leading to wide scale deforestation? Holzindustrie Schweighofer have said that they are not responsible for replanting forests, they will only be processing the wood provided. When a local Holzindustrie Schweighofer plant manager was pressed on this issue in his area of operation, all he said was “look out the window and you’ll see that we still have forests”, which of course doesn’t prove anything!

2. Why has planning permission been granted to Holzindustrie Schweighofer to build a huge wood processing plant in Covasna county before the Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) have been published? This is an astonishing revelation, and surely proves that financial concerns far out way environmental ones?

Vasile Decu June 10, 2013 at 23:59

Hello.

My name is Vasile Decu and, until recently, I was editor-in-chief of the Romanian version of BBC Focus Magazine.

I decided to leave the magazine because I was very unhappy writing about the latest scientific breakthroughs while living in a country which, in many respects, in turning back in time, for the worst. We also have poverty, corruption and so much ignorance… But you already may be aware of our situation…

One of the main reasons I found was the poor state of our educational system.

So I want to start an educational foundation – called Modern Explorers – that will invest in the best solution I can think of: the kids. As astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, one of my favorite scientists, authors and educators, puts it – “Adults are lost to me. I can’t use them. But give me the kids!”

I want to go to do school presentations, I dream of a basic 100 science books library in every school, I want to give them scholarships and many such things. The start seems to be the hardest…

But I don’t want the foundation to depend on donations and grants alone, but to have its own revenue sources. My first project is a travel magazine, dedicated to Transylvania – one of the most beautiful and wild places in Europe. In order to get it started, I’m using an Indiegogo campaign, which went live yesterday.

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/discover-transylvania-magazine/x/2837887

I’m writing to ask you if you can take a look at it and, if you like it, to spread the word about my project and let people help me.

Thank you so much!

With respect,
Vasile Decu
Science Journalist
